English Version
1. Competition Overview
Initiated by the United Nations University Global AI Network (UNU Global AI Network), the “AI for Sustainable Development Goals — Global Youth AI Future Innovation Competition” aims to encourage young people to use artificial intelligence to address sustainable development challenges, promote social innovation, and advance global youth development. The Macao Secondary School Division is open to secondary-school students in Macao. Taking account of research, design, and programming implementation capabilities appropriate to the secondary-school level, it encourages students to begin with genuine educational needs and develop AI projects that can be operated, demonstrated, and subjected to basic testing.
The 2026 theme is “AI and Education: AI Transforming the Educational Paradigm and Enhancing AI Literacy”. The competition focuses on two directions: using AI to improve education, and enhancing the AI literacy of learners, teachers, and communities.
2. Organisational Structure
Guiding Organisation: United Nations University
Organisers / Co-organisers: United Nations University Institute in Macau, UNU Global AI Network, Macao Computer Society, and MGM Macau
Supporting Organisation: Education and Youth Development Bureau of Macao
Judging Panel: Comprising scholars and experts in education, artificial intelligence, information technology, sustainable development, and related fields
3. Competition Themes and Project Directions
Each team must select one of the following categories. Projects must centre on an educational context and explain their relationship to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
(1) AI for Education
Use AI to improve teaching, learning, and education management, making education more personalised, accessible, inclusive, and effective. Possible areas include intelligent tutoring, adaptive learning, course and teaching-material generation, automated assessment and feedback, learning alerts, language learning, accessible learning, teacher professional development, and optimisation of school resources.
(2) AI for Social Innovation
Use AI to address social issues such as education equity, digital inclusion, youth well-being, community learning, or public services. Projects should define their target beneficiaries, actual needs, and expected social impact.
(3) AI for Less Developed Countries
Design low-cost, accessible, and locally appropriate AI education solutions for resource-constrained, remote, or underserved areas, such as offline learning tools, mobile-first technologies, teacher training, local-language learning, voice or SMS services, and lightweight infrastructure solutions.
4. Eligibility and Team Composition
Participation is free of charge.
Participants must be students enrolled in a Macao secondary school throughout the registration and competition periods.
Schools must register teams. Each school may enter a maximum of five teams; each team may have up to three students from the same school and be guided by one to two teachers. The organisers may adjust the quota according to the number of registrations.
Each student may join only one team, and each team may submit only one project.
Projects may be completed under teachers’ guidance, but the concept development, research, system design, data processing, and presentation must be led primarily by students. The judging panel may verify students’ actual participation through the defence.
5. Project Level and Technical Requirements
The basic requirement for this division is an operational prototype that secondary-school students can complete. Incorporation, commercialisation, or large-scale professional equipment is not required. Projects may take the form of websites, mobile applications, chatbots, data-analysis tools, computer-vision systems, smart hardware, or other AI solutions.
Projects must include AI functions that operate in practice. Concepts only, slide decks, ordinary database systems, or systems that merely simulate AI with fixed rules will not be accepted.
Teams must demonstrate an operational prototype and complete at least basic testing in a simulated or small-scale real educational setting, for example through use by classmates, teachers, or target users.
Teams must explain the models, platforms, data sources, prompt design, or training methods used, as well as the specific role of AI in the overall system.
If a project is recommended for progression to the global competition, the team must provide additional materials on technical maturity, real-world validation, and market or promotion potential in accordance with the latest global-competition requirements. Where the global competition rules differ from these regulations, the official global competition rules shall prevail.
6. Submission Materials and Formats
Important language requirement: In 2026, all registration materials, project content, attachments, posters, video subtitles, presentation slides, and defences will be accepted in English only. Proper names such as school names and student names may be provided using their official English translations.
Project Introduction: One English project introduction, preferably no more than two pages, describing the problem, target users, main functions, AI methods, innovation, and expected impact.
Research Report: One English research report, preferably six to twelve pages, including background, problem definition, solution design, technical methods, data sources, testing process, results, limitations, ethical and privacy considerations, and references.
Poster: One English poster in portrait orientation, 0.8 m wide and 1.1 m high, with text and visuals that can independently explain the key aspects of the project.
Demonstration Materials: Project photographs and an English demonstration video of no more than five minutes. The video must have clear English narration or explanations.
All written documents and posters must be submitted in PDF format, with each file not exceeding 50 MB. Videos must be uploaded in the format specified by the registration system or provided through a publicly accessible link.
File-naming convention:

Award-winning teams will receive certificates of participation.
The organisers may decide not to award a particular prize, establish special awards, or recommend outstanding teams for follow-up activities and the global competition process according to the standard of the projects.
11. Use of Artificial Intelligence, Originality, and Academic Integrity
Participants may use generative AI, open-source models, APIs, and third-party platforms to assist with research or development, but they must state in the research report the name and version (where applicable) of each tool, its purpose, and the parts completed by students.
Projects must be led by the participating students. Students may not misrepresent others’ work as their own, purchase finished products, have work completed on their behalf, or submit systems that they cannot reasonably explain and operate.
All data, images, code, models, articles, audio, and visual materials must be lawfully obtained and properly cited. When using open-source content, participants must comply with the applicable licence terms.
Unauthorised personal data, sensitive student data, or identifiable images of individuals must not be uploaded. Where real-person testing is involved, schools must obtain appropriate consent and adopt anonymisation and security measures.
Where plagiarism, fabricated data, undisclosed AI use, or other serious violations are found, the organisers may disqualify the team from participation or awards.
12. Intellectual Property, Licence, and Personal Data
The original intellectual-property rights in a project remain with the participants or their lawful rights holders. Participants must ensure that their projects do not infringe the intellectual-property, privacy, or other lawful rights of third parties.
For the purposes of competition assessment, display, promotion, education, and event records, participants agree to grant the organisers a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use the project title, abstract, poster, photographs, and demonstration excerpts. If a project involves unpublished technical information, the team should clearly indicate this when submitting the project.
Schools must ensure that they have obtained, in accordance with applicable requirements, the consent of students and their parents or guardians for registration, photography, public display, and the processing of personal data.
13. Supplementary Provisions
Projects may be excluded from assessment if materials are incomplete, submitted late, not in English, cannot be opened, deviate from the competition theme, or fail to meet the specifications.
The assessment results are final. No review or appeal on project content will be available, except to verify administrative or scoring errors.
The organisers may adjust the schedule, format, awards, and detailed rules in response to force majeure, venue, safety, public-health, technical, or global-competition arrangements. The latest announcement shall prevail.
By registering, participants confirm that they have read, understood, and agreed to comply with these regulations. The organisers reserve the final right of interpretation and handling of matters not covered herein.
